Parental exposure to the herbicide diuron results in oxidative DNA damage to germinal cells of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Barranger, Audrey; Heude-berthelin, Clothilde; Rouxel, Julien; Adeline, Beatrice; Benabdelmouna, Abdellah; Burgeot, Thierry; Akcha, Farida.
Chemical pollution by pesticides has been identified as a possible contributing factor to the massive mortality outbreaks observed in Crassostrea gigas for several years. A previous study demonstrated the vertical transmission of DNA damage by subjecting oyster genitors to the herbicide diuron at environmental concentrations during gametogenesis. This trans-generational effect occurs through damage to genitor-exposed gametes, as measured by the comet-assay. The presence of DNA damage in gametes could be linked to the formation of DNA damage in other germ cells. In order to explore this question, the levels and cell distribution of the oxidized base lesion 8-oxodGuo were studied in the gonads of exposed genitors. High-performance liquid chromatography...

Performance evaluation of injection metering systems AGRIAMBI
Antuniassi,Ulisses R.; Miller,Paul; Paice,Mark.
A method for measuring the performance of agricultural injection metering systems was developed and used to assess the characteristics of three commercial system designs. Steady-state characteristics were measured using both colored dyes and salt as tracers. Dynamic response characteristics were determined by measuring salt concentration downstream of the injection point by monitoring electrical conductivity of the spray solution. Salt added to a viscous test liquid changed viscosity slightly only at low shear rates and it is concluded that this liquid is appropriate for use in evaluation tests with injection systems. Results from tests with 2 systems specifically designed for operation with agricultural sprayers gave a linear response with both water and...

Pesticide contamination of the coastline of Martinique ArchiMer
Bocquene, Gilles; Franco, Alain.
In January and February 2002, the presence of certain agricultural pesticides throughout the coastline of the Caribbean island of Martinique was investigated. The tropical climate of the French West Indies is suitable for banana production, which requires intensive use of pesticides. An inventory of all pesticides used on the island (compounds and tonnage) was compiled. Surveys and analyses revealed the presence of pesticides in the plumes of seven rivers. The organochlorine chlordecone and metabolites of aldicarb were detected at nearly all of the monitored sites, even though the use of chlordecone has been prohibited since 1993. Two triazines (ametryn and simazine) were also identified. The concentrations of carbamates and triazines detected in the water...

PESTICIDE TAX, CROPPING PATTERNS, AND WATER QUALITY IN SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS AgEcon
Shumway, C. Richard; Chesser, Rayanne R..
The impact of an ad valorem pesticide tax on cropping patterns and pesticide use was examined in the South Central Texas Crop Reporting District. Output supply equations were econometrically estimated and used in the simulation. A 25 percent tax on pesticide was estimated to have major impacts on cropping patterns and on pesticide use. Assuming other input and output prices were unaffected, the supply of one important crop would fall by more than half. Demand for some of the highly soluble and persistent pesticides, which present the greatest threat to groundwater quality, would also decrease substantially (some as much as 50 percent).

Pesticides Residues and Trade: the Apple of Discord? AgEcon
Drogue, Sophie; DeMaria, Federica.
The impact of food safety standards on international trade has already been addressed. Generally, economists try to assess trade losses borne by exporters when importing countries impose stricter regulations. In this paper we assess the impact of the Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) of pesticides on the trade of apples and pears. Rather than focusing on a particular pesticide we take into account the entire list of substances set out by the various regulations with the aim is to understand how the similarity (or dissimilarity) of these can affect trade. Most studies assess the impact of sanitary standard regulations introducing directly in the analysis the MLR put in force in the importing country. We assume that what can be crucial is the difference in the...

Pesticides Uses in Crop Production: What Can We Learn from French Farmers Practices? AgEcon
Fadhuile, Adelaide; Lemarie, Stephane; Pirotte, Alain.
This article focuses on the demand system of French farmers concerning pesticides uses. We estimate the demand elasticities of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides with respect to pesticide expenditure, and considering crop differentiation. Then we compare two indexes that are used in agronomic literature to measure the intensity of pesticides uses. We retain a Linear Approximated Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) specification. A Full-Information Maximum Likelihood estimation procedure is used for dealing with the problem of censored dependent variable. We consider two cross-sections observed in 2001 and 2006 covering pesticides uses of three crops. We confirm the previous results of the literature that farmers response to price variation is very...

Abstract: Several methodologies have been proposed to assess the impact of pesticides applied to agricultural crops. The PestLCI Consensus v.1.0 tool presented herein helps estimating pesticide ewwmissions in agricultural processes to prepare inventories for life cycle assessment (LCA) studies. This important environmental management tool was improved to enable the incorporation of the potential impacts of these compounds on agricultural production systems. In addition, the present work also aimed to parameterize relevant agricultural production scenarios for Brazil. With this, it is expected to lead to the improvement of LCA studies that address the possible impacts of pesticides on human health and the environment.

MORAES,H.M.F.; COSTA,J.O.; PEREIRA,G.A.M.; SOUZA,W.M.; SILVA,A.A.; PAIXÃO,G.P..
ABSTRACT: Available information on physical compatibility and stability of pesticide mixtures is scarce and often divergent. This knowledge is of fundamental importance in the success of pest, disease, and weed control programs. Compatibility and stability of two glyphosate formulations (WG and SL) in a mixture with fluazinam + deltamethrin + trifloxystrobin/cyproconazole at four diluted water concentrations and different times were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The evaluations were performed at the following time intervals: immediately after mixing and 1, 5, 10, 30, 120, 900, and 1,440 minutes after the mixing of pesticides. Scores were assigned on a scale ranging from 1 to 5, where 1 meant immediate separation of compounds and 5 the perfect...

Physiological selectivity of insecticides to adult of Doru luteipes (Scudder, 1876) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Redoan,Ana Carolina Maciel; Carvalho,Geraldo Andrade; Cruz,Ivan; Figueiredo,Maria de Lourdes Corrêa; Silva,Rafael Braga da.
Doru luteipes (SCUDDER, 1876) is considered one of the best natural enemies of the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), feeding on their eggs and small caterpillars. For its conservation it is necessary to use selective insecticides to S. frugiperda and harmless to the predator. Therefore, objective of the present work was to evaluate the toxicity of insecticides registered to control of S. frugiperda. It was conducted bioassays with D. luteipes adults treated with insecticides directly by exposure to residues of compounds applied on glass plates and the consumption of eggs of S. frugiperda contaminated and offered each one, 24 and 48 hours after treatment. The insecticides were classified according to indices...

Pollutant effects on Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg), hemocytes: Screening of 23 molecules using flow cytometry ArchiMer
Gagnaire, Beatrice; Thomas Guyon, H; Burgeot, Thierry; Renault, Tristan.
The shellfish industry is an important economic activity in France, occurring mostly in estuarine zones subject to pollution due to anthropogenic activities. The harmful effects of pollutants on species inhabiting these estuarine zones are not well known. Among marine species, bivalve mollusks---particularly Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas-may serve a model of interest. The species is sedentary and filter-feeding, which favors bioaccumulation of pollutants in their tissues. Oysters may be suitable for studies on disturbance by pollutants of physiological activities, among which defense mechanisms are poorly documented in bivalves. In this study, effects of pollutants on hemocyte functions were monitored in Pacific oyster, C. gigas. Hemocytes were exposed...

Potential Impacts of Bt Eggplant on Economic Surplus and Farmers’ Health in India AgEcon
Krishna, Vijesh V.; Qaim, Matin.
In this article, the potential impacts of Bt eggplant technology in Indian agriculture are analyzed. Several proprietary Bt hybrids are likely to be commercialized in the near future. Based on field trial data, it is shown that the technology can significantly reduce insecticide applications and increase effective yields. Comprehensive farm survey data are used to project farm level effects and future adoption rates. Simulations show that the aggregate economic surplus gains of Bt hybrids could be around US $108 million per year. Consumers will capture a large share of these gains, but farmers and the innovating company will benefit too. As the company has also shared its technology with the public sector, Bt open-pollinated varieties might become...

Rapid method for determining the sensitivity of sulphate-reducing bacteria to biocides. ArchiMer
Sharma, A; Battersby, N; Stewart, D.
The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of a biocide is usually determined by adding it in various concentrations to a suitable growth medium which is then inoculated with the test bacterium. These cultures are then observed for up to 28 days for growth of the organism as shown by its production of black ferrous sulphide. A method has been developed whereby the MIC of a biocide can be found within 4 days. Instead of noting ferrous sulphide production, this new method measures changes in: 1) optical density and 2) sulphate reduction of a logarithmic culture of the test strain exposed to the biocide.

Relation of Breast Cancer and Malathion Aerial Spraying in Arica, Chile International Journal of Morphology
Cabello,Gertrudis; Valenzuela-Estrada,Mario; Siques,Patricia; Brito,Julio; Parra,Eduardo; Valdivia,Ursula; Lavin,Claudia; Manríquez,Alejandra; Ortega,Alejandro.
Breast cancer mortality has been increasing in Arica Chile where it has surpassed the national rates 11 times between 1990 and 2010. The city of Arica was sprayed with the organophosphrous pesticide malathion in order to control the Mediterranean fly 33 years ago. Moreover we have demonstrated that a malathion treatment induces the formation of breast carcinomas in Sprague Dowley female rats. The objective of this work was to find a relationship between malathion aerial spraying and the increased mortality rate due to breast cancer that has been observed in Arica in recent years. We extracted city data bases with all breast cancer cases diagnosed from 1995 to 2005 from the Dr. Juan Noe Crevani Hospital of Arica city and Ernesto Torres Hospital of Iquique....

Removal of chlorpyrifos insecticide in constructed wetlands with different plant species AGRIAMBI
Souza,Tamara D. de; Borges,Alisson C.; Matos,Antonio T. de; Mounteer,Ann H.; Queiroz,Maria E. L. R. de.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the remediation of water containing the insecticide chlorpyrifos by using constructed wetlands (CW) cultivated with Polygonum punctatum, Cynodon spp. and Mentha aquatica, operated under different hydraulic retention times: 24, 48, 96, 144 and 192 h. The system efficiency was based on reduction of the initial concentration of chlorpyrifos and toxicity of the contaminated water. The results showed that constructed wetlands are an excellent alternative for remediation of the insecticide chlorpyrifos in aqueous medium. It was observed that the average overall removal efficiency of the insecticide was 98.6%, and in the first hydraulic retention time, 24 h, chlorpyrifos was removed to levels below the...
